Lie angle is the angle between the shaft and the ground with the sole resting flat. Every putter is built to a stated figure, and most golfers never find out whether the one they own actually reads that figure once it's fitted to their own posture and stance width.
The usual way to talk about a lie error is in terms of where the face points at address — toe up, and the effective aim drifts one direction; heel up, and it drifts the other. That's a real effect and worth checking. But it isn't the only thing a lie error does, and it isn't even the part we spend the most time on at the Release Bay.
What the Capture Pair Actually Sees
We adapted the same two-camera capture setup used on every other club in the bag to the putting bay, reading spin axis at the moment the ball separates from the face on a putt the same way we would on a drive. And on a putter with a lie error, that reading regularly shows a small but real axis tilt — a few tenths of a degree of sidespin — even on putts the golfer started dead on their intended line.
That's the part a start-line conversation misses. A golfer with a good stroke can visually aim around a lie problem and still send the ball off the face carrying a slight sidespin component, because the sole not sitting flat changes how the face presents across the strike in a way that a compensated aim doesn't fully cancel out.
You can aim around where a putter points. You can't aim around what the face does to the ball at the moment of separation. That part shows up on the capture pair whether the start line looked right or not.
Why a Tenth of a Degree Is Worth Caring About
On a six-foot putt, a small axis tilt is nearly invisible — the ball doesn't travel far enough for it to matter. On a thirty-foot putt across a green with any slope, that same tilt has room to compound with the break already built into the line, and the miss reads as a misjudged read rather than as what it actually was.
This is why we see so many golfers who putt their short game confidently and then describe their long putts as "a bit of a coin flip." The short putts never travel far enough to expose a small axis tilt. The long ones do.
Why So Many Putters Are Off
Three reasons show up most often at the bay, roughly in order of frequency.
- The putter was never fitted to begin with, and the stock lie doesn't suit the golfer's posture and arm length
- The putter was bent for a previous owner or a previous setup and never re-checked
- The golfer's own posture has changed over the years — a coaching adjustment, a change in stance width, or simply age — and the putter never changed with it
The third one is the hardest for golfers to accept, but it's common. A putter set up correctly five years ago for a golfer who has since changed how they stand over the ball is now built for someone who no longer addresses the ball the same way.
How We Measure and Correct It
Static lie goes on a gauge first, read to a tenth of a degree against the manufacturer's stated figure. Then we run a set of putts through the capture pair at address posture, reading the axis tilt directly rather than only inferring it from the static number.
Where the two disagree by more than expected, a bend correction is fourteen dollars and takes a few minutes, followed by a re-read on the capture pair to confirm the axis tilt has actually closed, not just the static angle.
The Short Version
Putter lie angle is cheap to check and cheap to correct, and the part worth knowing isn't only where the face points at address — it's what the face does to the ball at the instant of separation. A capture pair reads that directly. Eyes and a stance adjustment can only ever approximate it.
