The wear that causes this isn't dramatic. It's a gradual rounding of the groove's leading edge from repeated contact with ball covers and turf, and it happens well before a groove looks visibly damaged or shallow. A wedge can look essentially new and still be well into its spin decay.
What We Measure at the Release Bay
Every wedge session includes a direct comparison: spin rate on the golfer's own wedges, read at the Release Bay from a clean lie, against spin rate on a fresh comparison set of the same loft and bounce. The gap between those two numbers is the spin decay, and we see it far more often than golfers expect to hear about it.
Why It Shows Up as a Distance Problem First
Golfers rarely describe spin decay in spin terms. They describe it as a wedge that used to stop quickly and now releases a few extra feet on every partial shot, or a full sand wedge that used to spin back off the front of the green and now just stops. Because the wedge still looks and feels normal at address, the change gets attributed to the green speed, the ball, or an inconsistent strike — not to the equipment itself, which is exactly where a season of gradual wear tends to hide.
A wedge losing spin doesn't announce itself. It just quietly asks you to fly the ball a little further and hope it stops in roughly the same place it used to.
What Speeds Up the Wear
Three factors accelerate groove wear beyond simple time and shot count.
- Firm, sandy turf conditions abrade the leading edge faster than soft turf does
- Range use with range-grade balls, which have a harder cover that wears grooves faster than premium urethane-covered balls
- Bunker play, since sand is genuinely abrasive against a groove edge in a way grass rarely is
A wedge used heavily for bunker practice on firm sand can show measurable spin decay in under a year, while the same club used mostly for full-swing approach shots on soft turf might hold its spin for two seasons or more.
What to Do About It
There's no fitting fix for a worn groove — sharpening a groove edge is not something we do or recommend, since it changes the geometry in ways that can violate conforming specifications. The practical options are tracking the decay so you know when a wedge has crossed from "still fine" to "actually costing you strokes," and rotating a wedge out on that evidence rather than on a fixed calendar guess.
